Terms of the test programme

What this is

Zapello is not finished. What you get is a test build — and you get it because you are taking part in a test programme. That is not a turn of phrase: the purpose of this programme is not to give you an app, it is to find out where the app breaks. Your participation is the measurement.

This page describes what that means for you. It asks nothing of you, and there is no box to tick. It tells you what you are taking part in.

What gets measured

For as long as you are in the test programme, the app sends measurements to us. The list is exhaustive — anything not on it is not sent.

How fast the app is. How long it takes from launch to the first picture, how long a channel change takes, whether the picture was pre-warmed, which playback engine was running and what kind of stream it was (HLS, TS, MP4, MKV or unknown), how many quality levels a channel offered.

How setup goes. That you started, which kind of source you chose (address, file, Xtream or QR code), whether the import worked and how long it took. If it failed: the error code you saw on screen (ZP-…) — not your provider's message.

Roughly how large your list is. Rounded to powers of ten, so "around a hundred" or "around a thousand". Not the exact number.

What kind of device. Android, Fire TV, iOS, Windows and so on — the platform, not your device model and not your device name.

That the app ran that day without crashing. One signal per day, nothing else.

Every one of these carries a random installation identifier created when you set the app up. It is not linked to your account and it will not be. So we can see that a channel change on a Fire TV took 900 milliseconds — we cannot see that it was you.

What does not get measured

No viewing behaviour. No channel names. No addresses, hosts or provider characteristics from your playlist. No IP address. No location. No contacts. No advertising identifiers. No device fingerprint. Nothing from your playlist, and nothing from which what you watch could be inferred.

Your playlists and credentials are encrypted on your device before they reach us, and decrypted only there. We cannot read them — not if we wanted to, and not for support either.

The legal basis for this

The measurement is part of taking part in the test programme. It rests on Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR — performing what we have agreed on. A test programme in which nothing is measured is not a test programme; that is why the measurement is not a separate consent but the subject matter itself.

What this means in practice: you cannot switch the measurement off on its own and stay in the test programme. What you can do is below — leave the test programme.

Crash data — a different basis

If the app crashes, a technical report goes to our error service (Sentry, data centre in the EU). It contains where in the programme it happened, which build was running and on which platform. Personal details are stripped beforehand.

These reports come from everyone, not only from test participants, and they rest on Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR — our legitimate interest in the app not crashing. So they are not part of the test programme; they run alongside it. We mention them here anyway, because a list that contains only half the truth is not a list. They are kept for 90 days.

You can object to processing based on legitimate interests (Art. 21 GDPR) — the address is at the bottom.

What else is stored

Your account holds your email address, your language, your devices and your sessions. Since you joined the test programme it also holds the date you were taken in — it records since when the measurement rests on your participation. All of it is listed in full in our privacy policy.

What else the test programme expects of you

Nothing binding. You do not have to report anything, try anything or answer anything. If you do find something, we would be glad to hear from you at support@zapello.app — one sentence is enough.

Two things we have to tell you, because they would otherwise come as a surprise:

• A test build can have faults a finished build would not. We make no promise that everything works, and we advise against relying on the app when it matters.
• We may change, replace or withdraw test builds, and we may end the test programme. What is on your device stays on your device.

And one thing we do not give you: content. Zapello is a player. You bring your own access, and you are responsible for being entitled to use it.

If you no longer want to take part

Then you leave the test programme — write to support@zapello.app and we will take you out. That ends the measurement, because its basis was your participation. Your account stays until you delete it; you can do that yourself at any time (in the app or under account).

What happens at launch

When Zapello leaves the beta, this test programme ends — and with it the basis on which we measure until then. After that we will ask you explicitly whether you want to keep sending measurements, and you can say no without anything about the app changing. Until you say yes, nothing is sent.
